One of Minnesota’s top incoming freshmen has been denied medical clearance to play for the team.

The university announced Monday that point guard Jarvis Johnson, who has a heart condition, will remain on scholarship and with the program. But the Minneapolis native won’t be able to take the court with the rest of the Gophers this season.

Johnson, his family and the athletic department said in a joint statement distributed by the school that they are “extremely disappointed” but focused on the highest priority, Johnson’s health. The university didn’t divulge details about Johnson’s condition, but he collapsed during a game in eighth grade because of a heart problem and had a defibrillator implanted in his chest.

The 6-foot-1 Johnson was the first Minnesota player signed by coach Richard Pitino straight from high school.
