Thursday was a good opening day of Summit League track champions for South Dakota State and the University of South Dakota.
Amy Paulzine claimed her first Summit League hammer throw title Thursday as the South Dakota State women’s track & field team competed on the opening day of the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Paulzine won the title with her mark of 169 feet, 3 inches. Three other Jackrabbit throwers posted top-five results. Paulzine’s win today marks the fourth time a Jackrabbit thrower has won the women’s hammer throw title in the past six years.
The Jackrabbits are currently in first-place with 44 points.
South Dakota swept both 10,000-meter races as Amber Eichkorn won the women’s race and Brant Haase won men’s race during day one of The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships held on Thursday at the Ellig Sports Complex. Both Coyote men and women finished the first day second in the team standings.
Eichkorn finished the 10,000 with a time of 36 minutes, 11.67 seconds for her first career Summit League title. She beat second place Savannah Turner of IUPUI by over a minute (37:27.76). USD’s Kelsey Barrett (38:05.29) and Megan Hilson (38:10.56) added scoring efforts for the Coyote women by finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.
Haase recorded his first Summit League title by winning the men’s 10,000 in 30:46.04. He topped second place Joel Reichow of South Dakota State by over 13 seconds (31:00.40), while USD teammate Mubarik Musa finished fourth in 31:14.33.
