This week new requirements went into effect requiring packaged foods have gluten free labels on them. National Association of Wheat Grower’s Immediate Past President Bing Von Bergen says while only 1 and a half percent of the nation’s population is gluten intolerant, he’s concerned about possible negative effects and impacts to the U.S .wheat industry.
Von Bergen says wheat is an important part of a healthy person’s diet.
The new requirements says that anything labeled gluten free must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten, ensuring that those products are technically free of wheat, rye and barley.
