A story in the New York Times about the flooding in the area seemed to indicate that the Corps of Engineers were concerned about Gavins Point Dam surviving the surge when the Spencer Dam on the Niobrara River failed last week.
John Remus, head of Water Management for the Corps in Omaha says that story was dramatic, but they were dealing with uncontrolled flows when some of the gates at the dam were frozen shut..
Remus says there were two gates that gave them problems..
Remus says they could have had more serious issues if that gate did not open…
The dam released water at a rate of one hundred thousand cubic feet per second from last Thursday night into Friday morning to contain the surge from the Niobrara River.
