A review of the U.S. cattle market and live cattle futures by the Government Accountability Office will last until at least May of 2017. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association President Todd Wilkinson is pleased the government agency is taking a thorough look at the problem.

He says besides the GAO review, the South Dakota Cattlemen’s parent group is working with the CFTC to look into the cattle market volatility issues.

Wilkinson says his group wants to know what’s causing the sharp rises and drops in the cattle futures markets.

The GAO investigation, which was requested by the Senate Judiciary Committee, is looking into the impact of high frequency trading and other changes in the fed cattle market over the past ten years.
