A Government Accountability Office report says climate change is costing U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars each year. The report says the federal government has spent more than $350 billion over the last ten years on impacts such as floods, natural disasters and drought. Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman says his group’s members are concerned about it.
He says agriculture has a role to play in helping mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The GAO report also indicated the Midwest and Great Plains will be greatly affected by climate change in the future. Lehman says that means federal lawmakers need to help producers deal with those issues.
The report also says the cost of climate change could reach $35 billion by 2050.
