Soybean gall midge adults which look like small, long legged flies are starting to show up in Nebraska. They lay eggs above the surface in the small cracks of the soybean plants. University of Nebraska Lincoln Entomologist Justin McMechan says gall midges have been causing problems the past two years for producers.
He says it’s not too difficult to spot gall midges.
McMechan says prevention with gall midge is a key in controlling or stopping the insect from doing any damage to soybeans.
Gall midges tend to be a problem in fields that are directly next to a field that was infected the previous year.
