Future Irrigation Concerns In Nebraska

Future Irrigation Concerns In Nebraska

Colorado officials are planning to build multiple large reservoirs Northeast of Denver to capture more of the South Platte River’s Nebraska bound water. And although this year has been a wet one in Nebraska, Lee Orton, Executive Director of the Nebraska State Irrigator’s Association says that’s concerning and something they’re monitoring.

He says urban demands for more water are growing in Colorado which has led to the planning for the reservoirs.

Orton says although there’s been plenty of moisture so far this year in Nebraska, that can change quickly.

The Nebraska-Colorado South Platte River Compact requires Colorado to leave a mean flow of 120 cubic feet per second from April through October.
