A longer-term study of special education is needed to contain costs and provide necessary services to the students that need them.

The “Extraordinary Cost Fund for Special Education” committee of the South Dakota legislature has been meeting this summer to work through the issues.

Committee Vice-chair, Senator Jim Bolin of Canton is suggesting further study next year..

Bolin says there are a lot of federal rules tied into special education…

The state has had a four million dollar special education fund for schools to tap into. Bolin says that need could expand rapidly…

The legislature’s Executive Board will make recommendation to the 2019 session on the future of that type of study.
