Funding Approved for Modernization of Locks and Dams

Senators have approved the funding measure for the modernization of locks and dams and the inland waterway system on a 90 to 8 vote. Waterways Council Director of Government Relations Tracy Zea says the $700 million for locks and dams is an important measure that will create jobs and provide for the construction of four locks.

He says the Senate legislation, which also includes $6 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers and $375 million for the inland waterways trust fund, will provide for reliable shipping of agricultural goods.

Zea says it’s critical for locks and dams to be upgraded and maintained for shipping to proceed smoothly.

Zea says locks and dams legislation has already passed out of a House committee and is awaiting full floor action. He expects that to occur sometime this week.
