This year’s drought has triggered the USDA Livestock Forage Program for six counties in South Dakota. One of those is Dewey. County Farm Service Agency Executive Director Deb Ducheneaux says those producers who want assistance under LFP need to apply at their office.
He says if you run more cows than you actually have you’re going to be limited to the feed needs of your cattle. Payments for eligible producers under LFP are $30 per head per month for beef cows and bulls. Ducheneaux says the hay supply in the county is pretty much gone and producers are having to go long distances in order to get livestock feed.
Ducheneaux says besides the drought’s impact on livestock producers, wheat growers have had to zero out their crop as that’s been devastated this year.
The LFP program payments are for three months and the six counties in South Dakota eligible include, Dewey, Campbell, Walworth, Potter, Edmunds and Mcpherson.
