Frost Damage in Row Crops Starting to Emerge

After initial thoughts the crop had escaped damage from the recent cold temperatures, some problems are starting to show up in corn and soybeans. Pioneer Field Agronomist Curt Hoffbeck says both South Dakota and Minnesota are seeing herbicide injury in soybeans that were sprayed with pre-emerge PPO products.

He doesn’t expect it to force total replant situations, but some farmers may be looking at inter seeding to boost soybean populations.

Corn is also showing some cold stress and light frost damage, but Hoffbeck says it’s mostly cosmetic and will only result in minimal yield loss.

As a result Hoffbeck says farmers should hold off spraying corn until next week to allow the plant time to recover. He is actually more concerned about corn fields with uneven stands and says yield loss there could range from two to six percent.
