Garretson, South Dakota 4th graders got to meet their adopted farmer Pete Bakken yesterday. Bakken farms near Garretson and through the school year has been providing videos and pictures of his farm to teach them about agriculture. Yesterday he met the class and talked to them about how he raises grain and livestock on his farm. Their teacher Matt Schrank says this experience is really enhancing his student’s education.

He says its important for farmers like Bakken to talk to young consumers about where their food comes from.

Fourth grader Austin Palmlund says having an adopted farmer is really a great learning activity for both farm and urban students.

And Peyton Abraham says he has enjoyed learning about agriculture.

The Adopt a Farmer program will continue through the school year and Bakken will provide additional videos to the class as well as a tour of his farm this spring.
