Three Nebraska farmers and an agronomist, all diagnosed with cancer, have filed a lawsuit against Monsanto alleging the company purposely misled the public about the dangers of glyphosate. The case was filed last Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Lincoln. The plaintiffs are being represented in part by Omaha-based Domina Law Group and attorney David Domina. He says their claim is based on a 2015 World Health Organization study listing glyphosate as a probable cause of cancer.
Domina says the plaintiffs contracted cancer due to prolonged exposure to glyphosate. However, not all of them have stopped using the herbicide. He says Monsanto is still at fault for concealing or discrediting research that shows a link between the chemical and cancer.
He says the fact that government agencies including FDA, USDA and EPA have all approved glyphosate does not infer they think the product is safe.
And Domina goes on to say that just because those agencies approved glyphosate and the Roundup Ready cropping system for use doesn’t mean they have any proof that it is safe to humans.
Charla Lord with Monsanto Corporate Engagement responded by saying they have sympathy for the plaintiff, but the science simply does not support their claims when it comes to glyphosate. She says agencies including EPA and other pesticide regulators around the world have reviewed numerous long –term carcinogenicity studies and agree that there is no evidence that glyphosate casues cancer, even at very high doses.
