Late last week, 210,000 gallons of crude oil leaked from Trans Canada’s pipeline in Marshall County South Dakota. Former state legislator Paul Symen’s cattle feedlot is a mile and a half from where the leak occurred near Amherst. He says his concern is if pipeline leaks occur and the company then goes out of business, who pays for the environmental cleanup.
He says the state needs to have some type of contingency fund in place to pay for oil spill cleanups.
Symens says the clean-up from Trans Canada’s spill in Marshall County was handled well by state and local officials.
Trans Canada officials say the leak near Amherst came from 5,000 barrels and none of the oil effected any drinking water.
