A former Minnesota quarterback is charged with assault for allegedly kicking a former Minnesota State linebacker in the head, leaving him critically injured.
Twenty-year-old Philip Nelson was charged Monday with first-degree assault and third-degree assault.
Authorities say Nelson kicked 24-year-old Isaac Dallas Kolstad in the head after another man punched and knocked him to the ground early Sunday as bars were closing in Mankato.
Police are still looking for the other man.
Kolstad is in critical condition. His family says he suffered severe head injuries. The criminal complaint says doctors aren’t sure he’ll survive.
Police released surveillance video of events surrounding the altercation and are asking for the public’s help.
Nelson announced plans to transfer to Rutgers after this past season, saying he was looking for a more pass-friendly offense.
