Helping livestock producers deal with foreign animal diseases is the focus of a pair of seminars set for Wednesday April 10 and Thursday April 11 in Huron and Sioux Falls. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says they’re trying to help producers be ready should any disease like Foot and Mouth Disease or African Swine Fever show up in the United States.
He says the pork secure program involves everything from biosecurity to premise identification and marketing plan and size of operation reporting. Thaler says by having the pork secure program in place it helps regionalize and contain any foreign animal disease that might pop up and keep export markets open.
Thaler says the seminars are important for all sectors of the livestock industry and even for grain producers as well.
He says the seminars at the Nordby Exhibit Hall on the State Fairgrounds in Huron on Wednesday and the Hilton Garden Inn in Sioux Falls on Thursday are co sponsored by the South Dakota Animal Industry Board, State Pork Producers Council and SDSU Extension. There is no charge to attend.
