Forage Quality Is Good But Quantity Is Down

Many farmers within the region have already harvested their second cutting of alfalfa hay, but due to lack of sufficient rainfall the tonnage of that second cutting is smaller than the first cutting.  SDSU Extension Forage Specialist, Sara Bauder says the quality has been good, but the quantity of hay is short.  Bauder says some areas to the north are just now harvesting their second cutting of alfalfa hay, while areas to the south have finished.  Bauder says it will depend upon future rainfalls to see if farmers will be able to harvest a third cutting of hay.  She says hay supplies may be short heading into the winter months.
