Iowa and Iowa State renew their rivalry this weekend while South Dakota, Nebraska and Minnesota seek bounce back victories.
The Hawkeyes and Cyclones were stunned Tuesday by the news that former Iowa star Tyler Sash — a native Iowan whose three-interception game at Iowa State in 2009 was a signature moment in a century-old rivalry — was found dead at just 27.
But the games must go on — and Saturday’s matchup in Ames is huge for the present and future of each program after both teams won their openers.
South Dakota is on the road again as the Coyotes play Saturday night at UC Davis. Both teams are 0-1 with USD falling at Kansas State and Davis losing at Nevada.
If South Alabama hoped to be overlooked by Nebraska, that won’t happen. Not after the Cornhuskers lost at home to BYU on a Hail Mary last week.
Jaguars coach Joey Jones says he expects to see Nebraska locked in and ready when the teams meet Saturday night in Lincoln.
The Huskers (0-1) will try again to give Mike Riley his first win as their coach.
South Alabama (1-0) defeated FCS Gardner-Webb last week.
Minnesota lost its opener against a highly rated TCU squad and plays on the road at 1-0 Colorado State
