Food Prices Rise For Thanksgiving 2021 But Consumers Can Still Be Thankful

The cost of your Thanksgiving feast will be higher this year than in 2020. Much of the increase is a result of turkey prices. USDA reports whole hen turkey prices have increased steadily in 2021 with current prices at $1.33 per pound. South Dakota Poultry Industries Association Executive Director Dr. David Zeman says on a national average that is up from last year.

Higher turkey prices are partially the result of a 2.3-percent decline in U.S. turkey production from 2020. However, Zeman says in the Midwest there are enough birds being produced to satisfy consumers this Thanksgiving. The bigger problem is the industry is having difficulty getting them to the grocery store.

eman says there is also increased demand for larger whole hens this year verses Thanksgiving 2020.

Despite food inflation this Thanksgiving and for 2021, American consumers spend less of their disposable income on food than anywhere else in the world and have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
