Food and Water Watch Files FOIA Lawsuit Against USDA on Swine Inspection Plan

The environmental group, Food and Water Watch filed a lawsuit in federal court against the USDA regarding their new swine inspection system. Food and Water Watch Senior Attorney Zach Corrigan says they proceeded with the Freedom of Information Act or FOIA litigation because the Ag Department is concealing and obstructing information.

He says USDA’s new rules take federal inspectors out of processing plants and replace them with inspectors not well trained or versed in protecting the food supply.

Corrigan says without federal employees on the inspection line, food safety becomes a concern.

Corrigan says with less government oversight the big packers will be able to inspect themselves with the goal of increasing line speeds, which is a threat to public health.
