The record snowfall and flooding in the Midwest and Plains states is having a negative effect on the nation’s transportation system, including grain movement. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says what’s unique about this year’s flooding and snow melt is it came later than usual.
He says flooding has affected the port at New Orleans, which is one of the main grain exports shipping areas.
Steenhoek says inland waterways have also been compromised by the recent flooding.
Steenhoek says there has also been damage and destruction of rail infrastructure, gravel roads and rural bridges.
