The first cases of influenza have been reported in South Dakota. Two different strains were identified in a Charles Mix County child and two adults over the age of 60 in Lawrence and Pennington Counties. State epidemiologist, Dr. Lon Kightlinger, says vaccination now is very important, especially for those age groups who are at higher risk.

Kightlinger says there are many options for people to obtain a flu vaccination.

He says the flu season is here and the state will have more cases and there will be people hospitalized and urges folks to get a vaccination to protect themselves and stop the spread of the flu.
