A herd of unvaccinated bison in Dewey County South Dakota has been confirmed to have contracted Anthrax. South Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedkoven says it’s the first case of the disease in the state this year.
Oedekoven says Anthrax vaccines are very effective and relatively inexpensive so he advises livestock producers to vaccinate for the disease.
Oedekoven says there haven’t been that many cases of Anthrax over the past few years as it’s shown up in only 3 or 4 states. He says North Dakota and Texas had some earlier this year. He says 2005 was the last year there was a significant outbreak.
