Fire Department Fights Blaze At JBS Grand Island Nebraska Meat Packing Plant

Grand Island Nebraska Fire Department crews were called out just before 10 pm Sunday night to a fire coming from the roof of the JBS Meatpacking plant. Fire Chief Cory Schmidt says the fire was coming out of the rendering area when they arrived and it was a challenge for firefighters to gain access to the actual fire itself.

He says they’re working with the State Fire Marshall to determine the cause and hope to have that determined by sometime today.

Schmidt says the fire department is also helping JBS and some outside consultants to find out the structural integrity of the roof.

Schmidt says anytime firefighters have to battle a fire on a burning roof it’s a hairy situation but fortunately no one was injured and the fire was contained and extinguished.
