Many fields in eastern and southern South Dakota have standing water following recent record flooding on several rivers. Yankton County Farm Service Agency Executive Director Dave Charles says while it’s been slow moving, the flood waters have inundated a lot of fields. So, it will be a challenge for producers to get fields dried up enough to get whatever harvest they can completed.
He says producers need to check with their crop insurance agent and make sure they report any losses.
Charles says another major challenge is just getting around as many farmers have to drive several miles due to road closures in areas hit by the flooding.
Charles says he doesn’t have a total yet on acres in the county that have been washed out but says the flooding has been significant.
