Sustainability is currently a buzzword with consumers, but it’s poorly defined and difficult to measure in the food production chain. Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture is attempting to change that. President Rod Snyder spoke at the Ag United Annual Meeting yesterday. He says the coalition made up of 70 groups is defining what sustainability means in grain production with all the stakeholders at the table.
He says younger consumers are driving the push for sustainable food products, but whether or not that will lead to labeling mandates is uncertain.
Snyder says farmers aren’t likely to get paid a premium for sustainably produced food, fuel and fiber. Instead the idea is that sustainable practices will increase profitability for farmers.
