American Feed Industry Association officials have filed comments with the Food and Drug Administration on federal regulation and record keeping requirements for feed manufacturing. AFIA Vice President of Public Policy and Education Leah Wilkinson says FDA solicited comments and they want the agency to consider streamlining or removing several unnecessary and duplicative regulatory requirements.
She says FDA also asked for comments on the Food Safety Modernization Act. Wilkinson says that includes the hazard analysis and risk based preventive controls and the current good manufacturing practices. She says the good manufacturing practices portion of the act needs to be streamlined as it goes too far.
Wilkinson says they told FDA there aren’t a lot of preventive controls needed for livestock and poultry feed manufacturing.
Wilkinson says most of the FDA regulations are unclear, antiquated and have nothing to do with enhancing the safety of America’s animal food supply.
