Federal Trade Commission Passes Meat Labeling Rule

The Federal Trade Commission has approved the Made in the USA rule or MUSA. It requires all meat and meat products to be 100 percent born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S. to qualify for Product of the USA label. The Family Farm Action Coalition is hailing that move. Coalition President Joe Maxwell says this will stop the mislabeling of meat by foreign companies and ensure consumers are getting what they’re told they’re getting.

He says the next step that must be taken is for USDA to follow suit and take action on the FTC rule.

Maxwell says since Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling was repealed independent cattle producers have been hurt by foreign beef claiming to be the same as U.S.A. product.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack has already announced USDA is reviewing the Product of the USA label.
