A deal has been struck and about 6,000 poor Nebraska families will receive an increase in federal aid.
Senator Kathy Campbell of Lincoln has reached an agreement with the governor’s office on her bill to raise the money given to families receiving the federal Aid to Dependent Children.
Campbell says the key to the deal is tying the aid to the rate of inflation…something not done now.
A family of three will get about 72 dollars more a month. The bill also removes the so-called “cliff effect” that cuts off all aid when income exceeds a certain level. It will instead be gradually reduced as income rises.
Campbell says the aid now will be tied to the rate of inflation.
Compromise language has been agreed to…and will come before the legislature in a couple of weeks.
Governor Pete Ricketts vetoed the bill as unsustainable. The deal reached avoids an attempted override by the Unicameral.
