As part of National Ag Week South Dakota farmers are visiting 4th grade classes across the state to talk to them about what they do on their farm. Yesterday I n Yankton, Webster Elementary students learned about wheat and pork production from Gayville farmer Jim Petrick. He told the students about what is involved in raising the pigs that end up as the pork products they eat every day like bacon, ham or sausage.
Petrick has participated in this educational event during National Ag Week for the last several years and says it’s important to connect with these future consumers.
Freeman Dairy Producer Vicki Schultz also told the class how they produce milk at their 1,500 cow dairy in an environmental and sustainable manner.
Schultz says she hopes the students will see agricultural in a positive light after meeting the people that produce their food.
The students were able to bring their new found knowledge of wheat, pork and milk production together through a pizza party. The classroom visits were coordinated by Ag United.
