House Budget Chair Paul Ryan has released a 15 year House budget resolution that would cut farm program spending by 23 billion dollars from 2014 to 2024. It would also turn the supplemental nutrition assistance program into a block grant to the states. National Farmers Union’s Vice President of programs Chandler Goule says the farm bill that’s already passed has saved the government $ 23 billion by cutting commodity and conservation programs and snap. He says Ryan should look elsewhere for savings.
Goule agrees with House Ag Ranking member Collin Peterson who says the hatchet approach taken by Congressman Ryan is not serious or thoughtful.
Goule says Agriculture has already given more than its fair share of cuts and has done it more than once. He says it’s time for any more cuts to come from other areas of the budget.
