President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to address the dramatic rise in food hunger. The Farmers Union supports that effort. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says the order calls for increased food assistance for families missing meals due to school closures as well as a boost to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program or SNAP.

He says most of the funding from the Farm Bill goes to SNAP.

Hansen says not only is there backing for increasing SNAP assistance and addressing food insecurity from the President but also from the new Senate and Ag Committee Chairs and the incoming Ag Secretary.

According to data from the National Farmers Union, one in six adults and one in four children have experienced food insecurity during the pandemic, rates that are about 50 percent higher than was seen a year ago in the United States.
