A proposal by the U.S. Postal Service to slow down first class mail delivery is drawing heat from the Farmers Union. Currently first class mail is supposed to be delivered within a one day to three day time frame, however in an effort to cut costs, USPS has proposed extending that range to five days. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says if that proposal is adopted it will cause major problems in Rural America.
He says the USPS plan would be particularly detrimental for packages containing time sensitive materials such as live animals, perishable foods, ballots and prescription medications.
Sombke says Farmers Union will be working with members of Congress to put pressure on the USPS not to go through with their proposal.
Sombke says with Rural America already facing an access problem for broadband services, getting hit with this USPS plan just creates a double whammy and further difficulties for those in rural areas.
