Farmers Union Opposes South Dakota Zoning Legislation

The South Dakota Senate State Affairs Committee has passed out HB 1140 and sent it to the full Senate for consideration. The legislation would consolidate county zoning decisions regarding confined animal feedlots. South Dakota Farmers Union opposes the measure. Legislative Director Matt Sibley says they are pleased an amendment to the bill got rid of a pricey bonding requirement for appeals.

He says they are still concerned however that consolidation of appeals are included in the legislation.

Sibley says another concerning component of the bill is what’s known as denial of appeal on preliminary acts such as public notices.

Should Senators approve HB 1140, it then will go to the Governor for his signature.
