The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced it is moving the Grain Inspections, Packers and Stockyards Administration to the Agricultural Marketing Service. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says his group’s members oppose the move because it takes market protections away from farmers and ranchers.
He says by moving GIPSA to AMS it lessens the agency’s authority to regulate noncompetitive market practices.
Johnson says when combined with the earlier decision to eliminate the Farmer Fair Practice rules, the action removes most market protections for producers.
Johnson says NFU is urging the USDA to reconsider the decisions to remove the Farmer Fair Practice rules as well as moving GIPSA to AMS.
