Farmers Union Members Push For COOL

South Dakota Farmers Union members are working to gather support from Congress and the Administration to keep Country of Origin Labeling intact. Friday, the group rallied in Watertown during the President’s visit. Legislative Director Matt Sibley says their next step will be to join other state farmers union groups in a COOL Fly In the week of May 18 in the nation’s capital.

Sibley says not only are their attacks in Congress to roll back or repeal COOL but now the issue is getting caught up in the trade agreement and fast track debate. He says there’s some belief that if COOL is left in place it will scuttle the Trans Pacific Partnership deal as well as Trade Promotion Authority.

Close to 100 farmers union members from several state groups are expected to attend next week’s Fly In. About 20 of those will be from South Dakota.
