Farmers Union Likes Senate Farm Bill But Wants More Funding For The Safety Net

National Farmers Union leaders are pleased the Senate Ag Committee approved the 2018 farm bill this week and sent it to the Senate floor. NFU President Roger Johnson is hopeful they’ll get the measure passed through the full Senate and then conferenced with the House and approved this year. He says having it passed in a bi partisan measure is positive.

He says technical issues kept Senator Grassley from being able to introduce his payment limit provision but Johnson expects that to resurface in an amendment once the farm bill is heard on the Senate floor.

Johnson says the one area they want to see improved in the legislation is for more funding to go into the safety net portion of the bill.

Johnson says if that much money can be found to cut taxes, then Senators should be able to find at least some additional funding for the safety net.
