Farmers Union Enterprises which owns Redwood Farms in Estherville, Iowa is donating 150,000 pounds of pork ribs to food banks in five states. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke whose group is part of Farmers Union Enterprises says their goal is to help people who’ve been suffering from the pandemic and who need food.

He says the pork ribs which are going to food banks in South and North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana and Wisconsin have been processed and packaged and are ready to go.

Sombke says by opening the Iowa processing plant Farmers Union Enterprise officials are able to show farmers can run this type of business themselves and be successful.

Sombke says with many restaurants closed due to COVID 19, Redwood Farms saw a sharp decline in demand and needed to make room in their freezers otherwise they’d have had to stop production.
