The U.S. House is expected to vote on Presidential Trade Promotion Authority today. That allows the Chief Executive to negotiate trade deals with just an up or down vote of Congress. South Dakota Farmers Union President, Doug Sombke says the Farmers Union opposes the bill.
Sombke says allowing TPA does not ensure trade agreements are transparent and gives too much authority to one person without necessary oversight from Congress.
Supporters of TPA say it’s needed for important trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership can be approved.
