The Nebraska Legislature’s Ag Committee Wednesday reconsidered the bill calling for right to farm to be placed in the state constitution. Farmers Union President John Hansen whose group opposes the measure says the bill is a bad idea.
The Right to Farm amendment seeks to protect the rights of farmers and ranchers by preventing the State Legislature from passing new regulations affecting agriculture without a compelling state interest. Hansen says that legal definition is problematic.
Hansen says another problem with the right to farm amendment is it helps larger ag operations at the expense of smaller ones.
While Nebraska Cattlemen back the measure, Farmers Union opposes it and Farm Bureau has a neutral position on it.
