National Farmers Union leaders are pleased with the Senate Ag Committee for approving and sending on the U.S. Grain Standards Reauthorization Act. NFU Vice President of Programs Chandler Goule says the Senate legislation contains powers for the Secretary of Agriculture to act quickly if a port strike would occur like it did in Vancouver last year.
Goule says the Senate version of the grain standard reauthorization act is much better than the House version and they’re hoping to see final Senate passage and then a solid conferencing with the House to contain the Senate components of the bill.
Goule says the Ag Secretary needs to have the authority to make sure grain inspectors can work so that grain can move freely and that the product doesn’t rot due to a labor slowdown or stoppage. He says the Senate measure contains that important language.
