Farmers Try To Catch Up With Planting

Farmers took full advantage of the nice weekend weather and were planting both corn and soybeans.  In northwest Iowa, some of the earlier planted crops have begun to emerge.  Mitch Moritz who farms in Woodbury and Plymouth Counties says this year following some rains, the soil conditions are ideal.

Moritz was custom planting for a neighbor.  He says he has finished with his own corn planting but still has a few acres of soybeans yet to plant.  He says he waited on his planting until the soil temperatures had warmed up.

The northwest Iowa farmer wants every seed to emerge within 72 hours after it has been planted.  He is hoping the soil remains soft and does not dry out causing crusting to occur.

Moritz says he has received close to two inches of rain since April 1st.  However, prior to that date conditions were quite dry.
