Farmers Make Modifications To Planting Due To Dry Conditions

Farmers Make Modifications To Planting Due To Dry Conditions

Planting has begun around the region, but many farmers like Brad Harvey had to wait a few days hoping that warmer temperatures would arrive.  Harvey farms in western Plymouth County in the Loess Hills area of northwest Iowa.  He started planting his corn last week and was fortunate to get some rain over the weekend, but he has some concerns with the weather forecast calling for cooler conditions.  Due to the dry conditions, Harvey says he made some modifications with his planter.  Harvey hasn’t yet started to plant any soybeans, saying he wants to finish his corn first.  Rolling  hills may best describe the ground Harvey farms, and because of that, he needed to implement several conservation measures.  A year ago, he was able to get into his fields earlier and was nearly done planting his corn by May 1st.
