Farmers Feeding Families Look at Right To Farm Laws at Meeting

Families Feeding Families is hosting a farm forum April 12 in Yankton on Right to Farm Covenants. Sioux Falls Attorney Brian Donahoe will explain these rules and how they could be added to Yankton County’s zoning ordinance.

In South Dakota, Donahoe says counties including Minnehaha and Turner have these provisions and they provide a reasonable level of protection for agricultural operators.

However, Donahoe says there are ways to strengthen the Right to Farm covenants to provide more protection for farmers and help prevent county commissioners from being sued.

The county commission has the authority to adopt Right to Farm rules, but they may be referred to a public vote.
The farm forum is scheduled for Monday April 12 at 7pm at the Easton Yankton Archery Center.
