Spring field work has begun in northwest Iowa, according to an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach agronomist. Leah Ten Napel says farmers are tilling their ground, and applying fertilizer and herbicides. Ten Napel says field conditions are a bit dry, but they are looking good for the start of the crop season.
Ten Napel was traveling across her region on Tuesday checking on moisture levels within the subsoil.
She says soil temperatures are still in the 40’s, but with good weather forecast for the week she believes those soil temps will rise and may hit 50 degrees, which is ideal for corn planting. The Iowa State University extension crops specialist believes farmers in her region may start planting their corn either this week or next week.
