When wildfires race across a field with strong winds of at least 45 mph, or higher, destroying everything in its path, including homes, barns, outbuildings, and other structures, often times fire fighters need the help from farmers. Such was the case Saturday, when the seven community fire departments of Plymouth County, Iowa, were trying to stop several raging fires that destroyed two homes and burnt acres of farm ground. Le Mars Fire Chief, Dave Schipper says he is grateful for the assistance offered by local farmers. Schipper says in his 34 years as a fire chief and state fire marshal, he has never before seen conditions like those from Saturday’s wildfires. He compared it to a blizzard, only with thick smoke and blowing dirt. He says the fire stretched over three miles. Schipper says there were 15 reported fires in the county and it was more than 12 hours before the fires were under control and finally extinguished.
