Later this week many of us will be enjoying our Thanksgiving meal feast. When we do, we need to remember the cost of that meal and how much actually goes to the farmer who produces that food. The National Farmers Union has just released their thanksgiving version of the farmer’s share. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says less than 16 cents of each dollar derived from that meal goes to the producer.

He says when you break down the cost of the trimmings to that thanksgiving meal, the farmers share is between 6 cents and 24 cents.

Hansen says the farmer’s share of the main course and dessert is between 11 cents and 93 cents.

Hansen says while we should be thankful for the plentiful and quality food supply that we have,we also need to be mindful of the people who do the work, take the risk and produce that food. He says they need to be paid fairly so they can take of their families and stay in business.
