President Trump is moving forward with renegotiation of NAFTA. That’s after last week it was reported he was planning to pull out of the pact. Following that he spoke with Canadian and Mexican leaders and decided to renegotiate instead. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson believes the nearly 25 year old deal needs to be redone especially to address the trade deficit. He says however, the President will be facing challenges with that given his recent rhetoric.

He says besides the trade deficit problem, there are some problem areas for agriculture including dairy and poultry.

Johnson says the redo of NAFTA will also be challenging in dealing with Mexico as the President’s comments have caused Mexico’s leaders to start looking for other market suppliers on not just corn, but possibly pork and even beef.

While Johnson expressed concern at the President’s recent remarks to our North American trading partner, former USTR Michael Froman told Canadians, negotiations under President Trump will be less predictable.
