Federal lawmakers differ on what to do about School meal standards. A House committee recently approved a measure requiring USDA to grant waivers to schools whose meal programs have been losing money for six months due to meal changes sought by the administration. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott Vanderwal doesn’t like the federal government making nutrition decisions for school children.
Vanderwal says meal decisions at the schools should be made by local school officials.
The administration has been trying to get young people to eat healthier and has convinced USDA to push forward stricter dietary rules. House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers says they’re trying to force children to eat food they don’t want so many are leaving school grounds, not eating it or throwing it away.
